Happy Sábado ☕
Today we go to Mexico City again, but somewhere different.
It's Saturday morning at a public basketball court.
A father is rebounding for his son, who just missed his tenth shot in a row.
Watch what the dad says before his son walks off.
THE SCENE 🖼️
Javier: Otra vez, Andrés. Tira otra vez.
Again, Andrés. Shoot again.
Andrés: No, ya. Ya valió.
No, forget it. It's done.
Javier: ¿Cómo que ya valió? Llevamos diez minutos.
What do you mean it's done? We've only been here ten minutes.
Ten minutes and he's already ready to quit. That "ya valió" is Andrés giving up before he's even tired. His dad catches it right away.
Andrés: Es que no me sale nada hoy.
Nothing is working for me today.
Javier: A nadie le sale todo siempre. Ni a mí.
Nobody gets everything right all the time. Not even me.
Andrés: Tú ya sabes jugar.
You already know how to play.
Notice Andrés is arguing with the compliment his dad just gave himself. That's a teenager talking. He wants his dad to have always been good, so his own struggle feels less fair.
Javier: Yo fallé como mil tiros antes de meter el primero bueno.
I missed like a thousand shots before I made my first good one.
Andrés: No te creo.
I don't believe you.
Javier: Créeme. Pregúntale a tu tío.
Believe me. Ask your uncle.
That's a small joke, but it does real work. He's not defending himself with words alone. He's offering proof. That opens Andrés up a little.
