Refranes are one of the few parts of Spanish that stay remarkably consistent across countries, which is rare, given how much vocabulary shifts from region to region.
"El que adelante no mira, atrás se queda" is recognized almost everywhere Spanish is spoken, largely unchanged. That consistency is part of why it lands so well: it's shared cultural memory, not local slang.
That said, you will hear small variations depending on where you are. In parts of Spain, older speakers sometimes swap the order slightly: "El que no mira adelante, atrás se queda," same meaning, different rhythm.
In Mexico, you'll often hear it shortened in casual conversation to just the second half, "atrás se queda," used almost like a standalone warning, the way an English speaker might say "you snooze, you lose" without the full setup.
